Instead of spending all that money at the store for a product that may or may not be clean of toxic ingredients, try to make your own laundry soap. It only takes a few ingredients and they’re all natural and toxic-free.

Why make your own laundry soap?

When shopping from big box stores or even the small local grocer, the laundry detergent options will usually consist of big names. These companies offer a variety of products both “clean” and “unclean”. Sadly, even those that are deemed as “clean” usually contain quite a few toxic chemicals that really aren’t necessary.

When you take natural cleaning agents and combine them to make your own laundry soap, you will know what is going into your laundry load and you’ll probably save a few bucks each time too. This particular recipe is currently costing us about $0.15 per load.

What you’ll need:

Making laundry soap only requires a few ingredients. You’ll need:

  • Baking soda -64 oz (I prefer aluminum free)
  • Washing soda -55 oz (aka Sodium Carbonate)
  • Castile soap bars- 3 (I use Dr. Bronners from Azure Standard)
  • Borax -64 oz
  • Essential Oils -10-15 drops (if you want it scented)
  • a cheese grater
  • a blender
  • a glass storage jar (I use a 1 gallon size jar)
  • a scoop (1 load uses 2 Tbsp)
  • a 5 gallon bucket or very large mixing bowl

Lets make your own laundry soap!!

01– Grate your castile soap

  • Using a cheese grater or food processor, grate the bars of soap

02– Mix your ingredients

  • add everything to a large mixing container and mix well

03– Blend to a fine powder (optional)

  • using a blender and a cup, blend the powder until its a fine consistency
  • this step isn’t required but is one we do as we prefer the finer powder

04– Transfer to a glass storage jar

  • we use gallon size glass jars from Azure Standard (links below)

Where do I get my supplies?

We typically use Azure Standard for our bulk supplies. We really like that we can get organic and natural products for a much better price. You can make a free account with Azure Standard using my link here. You’ll be able to search for a drop-off location near you.

The products that I get from Azure Standard in this recipe are:

  • Baking soda
  • Washing soda
  • Castile Soap bars
  • 5 gallon buckets

The Borax I purchase is this one

The essential oils we use are from Doterra. If you have interest in shopping from Doterra, leave me a comment and I can get you set up.
